Welsh Athletics & Run Wales National Awards Dinner 2022 & November Event Results Round-Up

Three Carmarthen & District Harriers Athletics Club members have been recognised for their contributions to athletics in Wales recently.

The Welsh Athletics and Run Wales National Awards Dinner 2022 was held at Sophia Gardens, Glamorgan Cricket Club in Cardiff on Saturday evening 12th November.

It honoured and rewarded the great work of Clubs, Groups, Coaches, Leaders, Officials, Volunteers and Athletes across Wales at all levels.

Carmarthen Harriers Club President Dr Hedydd Davies received the 'Welsh Athletics Athlete Achievement Award 2022' at the dinner over the weekend in Cardiff.

Elsewhere, Carol Jones and Joan Goldsmith will both receive the 'Welsh Athletics Award of Honour' in 2022 by Welsh Athletics, confirmed at the annual general meeting last month.

The award is made in recognition of a minimum of twenty five years of active service to the sport in Wales at club, schools, regional and/or national level.

Other Carmarthen Harriers members who have received the Welsh Athletics Award of Honour over the years have included RB Ron Evans (1984); Dr Hedydd Davies (1998); Stephen Perks (2016), Kevin Evans (2020), Dorrien Thomas (2020) and Ralph Siggery (2021).

Event Results

It's been a busy start to November as the Cross Country, Road Running and Mountain/Trail Running season continues. In addition, the indoor athletics season in Wales began at the beginning of the month in the Welsh capital. Below are the results from events held between October 29th and November 13th at Llanberis, Cardiff, Cwmafan Bristol and Milton Keynes.

Snowdon Marathon Eryri - Llanberis (Saturday 29th October)

After a three year gap, the Snowdon Marathon was back in 2022 at Llanberis at the end of October. Congratulations to Jack Tremlett and Huw Davies, who completed the Marathon in 3:05:46 and 3:44:43 respectively .

Welsh Athletics & Welsh Schools U14, U16 & U18 Indoor Combined Events Championships 2022 - National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff (Sunday 6th November)

The 2022-2023 indoor athletics season began with the Welsh Athletics and Welsh Schools Indoor Combined Events Championships at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff.

Events on the track were the 60m Hurdles, 200m and 800m whilst on the field, Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put were the trio of disciplines contested to make up the Quadrathlon or Pentathlon.

Three Carmarthen Harriers members entered the indoor season opener at Cardiff and there were a number of fantastic performances and new personal bests.

After a third place finish 12 months ago, it was victory for Jessica Lee in the under 18 girls' age group and international selection for Glasgow in a fortnight's time - 60m Hurdles (9.22); 800m (2:40.87); Long Jump (5.55m); High Jump (1.62m); Shot (9.33m).

Elsewhere, Taliesin Thomas was sixteenth - 60m Hurdles (11.67); 200m (28.10); 800m (2:51.90); Long Jump (4.74m); Shot (6.60m) and Tygan Davies seventeenth - 60m Hurdles (10.61); 200m (25.96); 800m (2:21.89); Long Jump (4.86m); Shot (8.23m) in the under 16 boys and under 18 boys respectively.

Tata Steel RunTech Mini Miler Fun Run 2022 - Cwmafan (Sunday 6th November)

The Tata Steel RunTech Mini Miler Fun Run was held prior to the Richard Burton 10K at Cwmafan in Port Talbot. Under 11 Paige-lily Williams was the fourth female finisher to cross the line.

 

 

John H Collins Gwent Cross Country League - Event 2 - Blaise Castle, Bristol (Saturday 12th November)

The 2022 / 2023 John H Collins Gwent Cross Country League was back this week, taking place at a sunny Blaise Castle in Bristol on Saturday 12th November.

Carmarthen Harriers members and their parents made the longest journey of the league season to South West England to compete in the second fixture of five this season.

Results were as follows:

Novice Girls: Megan Evans (6:46); Paige-lily Williams (6:47); Teaghan Williams (7:29); Elliw Mai Jones (7:57)

Under 13 Girls: Lowri Morgan (11:29); Gwenan Fflur Jones (13:44)

Under 13 Boys: Gethin Thomas (10:47)

Under 15 Girls: Amelia Williams (14:16); Megan Thomas (16:15); Anastasia Eggleston-Stoker (16:15); Scarlett Richards (17:13)

Under 15 Boys: Joshua Barnett (13:14); Daniel Warrender (14:02)

Under 17 Women: Eleanor White (17:02)

Under 17 Men: Ifan Bowen (16:49); Steffan Davies (17:08); Steffan Bridger (17:29)

Under 20 Women: Jessica Hyland (16:45)

Senior Men: Huw Davies (34:59)

The John H Collins Gwent Cross Country League is set to visit Carmarthenshire next, as the club will host fixture three of five at Pembrey Country Park in under three weeks (Saturday 3rd December, incorporating the West Wales Cross Country Championships).

British Athletics Cross Challenge Series - Event 2 - Teardrop Lakes, Milton Keynes (Saturday 12th November)

Two Carmarthen Harriers athletes made the journey from West Wales to Teardrop Lakes in Milton Keynes on Saturday 12th November for the second leg of the 2022 / 2023 British Athletics Cross Challenge Series featuring the best cross country athletes from across the whole of the United Kingdom.

The series began in October at Cardiff's Llandaff Fields. The event returned to Milton Keynes ahead of the upcoming event at Liverpool at the end of this month.

There were excellent top 10 finishes for Iwan Thomas 18:50 and Finley Bruce 19:32 in the under 17 men's race, placing 3rd and 8th.

Neil Thomas was also present as one of the Welsh Athletics Home Countries International team managers.
