Two-day Dyfed Schools Athletics Championships 2023 at Carmarthen Leisure Centre

Thursday 8th June and Monday 12th June saw the Dyfed Secondary Schools & Colleges Athletics Championships 2023 return to the refurbished Carmarthen Leisure Centre Athletics Track in Johnstown.

It saw over 300 athletes in year 7 to sixth form compete from more than 20 schools and colleges in the Pembrokeshire, Brianne, Llanelli and Ceredigion areas.

The top finishers in each discipline from the four area championships last month at Carmarthen qualified to represent their area at the two-day weekday event (along with other middle and senior athletes).

 

 

The action got underway last Thursday daytime as the majority of events were held over a five-hour timetable - 100m/200m/300m/400m sprints, sprint hurdles, 800m and 1500m, long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot, javelin and discus.

The other eight disciplines were completed four days later on Monday evening of this week, including the 300m/400m hurdles, 1500m steeplechase, 2000m steeplechase and 3000m along with the hammer and pole vault.

2023 Dyfed Schools Championships records were broken in the following events, congratulations to:

- Kemsi Isboekwu (Penglais): Year 7 Boys 100m (12.4) & 200m (26.4)

- Dewi Ifan (Bro Teifi): Year 7 Boys Discus (19.29m)

- Sally Owen (Penweddig): Year 8 Girls 300m (47.1)

- Tia Powell (Dyffryn Aman): Year 8 Girls Triple Jump (8.77m)

- Summer Evans (QE High): Year 8 Girls Javelin (30.41m)

- Beatrice Morgan (Bro Dinefwr): Year 9 Girls 100m (12.3 - Equal Record), 200m (25.3) & Long Jump (5.34m)

- Darcy Coslett (Bryngwyn): Year 9 Girls 300m (41.7)

- Lleucu Lloyd (Bro Preseli): Senior Girls Javelin (41.65m)

- Storm Evans (QE High): Senior Girls Discus (40.49m)

- Ffion Ouseley (Bro Preseli): Senior Girls 1500m Steeplechase (6:18.1)

Thanks go to all the Welsh Athletics officials and school teachers from all four areas who helped and ensured that the event ran smoothly, whether it was track judging, timekeeping, starting, field judging or non technical duties.

A Dyfed Schools team for the Welsh Schools National Track and Field Championships, to be held on Saturday 1st July at Cardiff International Sports Stadium, will be selected following the Dyfed schools championships.

The event in three weeks time will feature junior, middle and senior teams from Afan Nedd Tawe, Cardiff & Vale, Dyfed, Eryri, Glamorgan Valleys, North East Wales, Powys and South East Wales with Welsh Schools selection for the SIAB Schools Track & Field International in Grangemouth on offer.
