Harriers represent the club and Wales at the British Athletics Cross Challenge Series in Liverpool

Eight Carmarthen Harriers endurance athletes made the journey to the North West of England over the weekend to represent the club and country.

The third fixture of the 2021 / 2022 British Athletics Cross Challenge Series was held at Sefton Park in Liverpool on Saturday 27th November (which also hosted the European Cross Country Championship trials for the event in Dublin in December).

It featured high-quality races in all age groups with many of the top cross country athletes from across the whole of the United Kingdom attending.

Sixteen athletes in the Under 17 Women, Under 17 Men, Junior Women and Junior Men's categories were selected to represent the Welsh team at Liverpool which included Carmarthen's Eva Edwards (junior women) and Dafydd Jones (junior men).

The series began last month in Wales at Cardiff's Llandaff Fields, which formed a part of the World Athletics Cross Country Tour (Gold Standard event) before heading to Teardrop Lakes in Milton Keynes a fortnight ago.

The day began mid morning with the European Men's Short Course Relay Trial over a fast 1.5km. Iestyn Williams finished in 14th.

William Coles (Under 13) and Iwan Thomas (Under 15) followed up their third place finishes in Milton Keynes a fortnight ago with more excellent individual results in Liverpool. In their respective races, Coles finished in fourth whist Thomas was fifth.

Iwan was joined by teammate Jake Lynock in the under 15 boys category, crossing the line in 30th position.

5.5km was the distance for the under 17 men and Steffan Davies completed the course in 72nd.

Eva Edwards and Dafydd Jones represented the Wales U20 Junior Women and Men teams. Edwards was 31st overall whilst Jones came in 42nd. Both athletes were the third Welsh athlete home in their respective events.

The final event of the day saw the Senior Men complete 3 large laps with more than 500 runners taking part, Huw Davies competed and came 357th.

Next up in the New Year is a trip to Belfast (Billy Neil Centre) on Saturday 22nd January followed by the fifth and final race of the series at Loughborough (Prestwold Hall) in March which will also incorporate the 2021 UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships.
