Harriers' Athletes Gearing up for trips to Bristol & Cardiff - This Weekend

LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER ACTION-PACKED WEEKEND...

Cross Country, Indoor Athletics & Road takes centre stage this forthcoming weekend...as endurance runners will head to the league finale in Bristol & Newport whilst International athletes from Wales & England arrive in the Welsh Capital.

Here's what to look forward to on Saturday & Sunday...with individual and team awards going to be decided in South West England.

SATURDAY 2ND MARCH: JOHN H COLLINS GWENT CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE - BRISTOL

Runners from clubs across South Wales and the South West of England are gearing up for the trip over to Bristol on Saturday (March 2nd) for the fifth and final John H Collins Gwent Cross Country League match of the 2018/19 campaign. The grounds of Blaise Castle will welcome competitors, officials and spectators to round five of five and has a great history of hosting Gwent League matches for a number of years.

Westbury Harriers members have been hard at work to put on this league finale and will look forward to competing on home turf following the postponement of this very event in March 2018 because of the adverse weather conditions where the heavy snow arrived across the country.

The John H Collins Gwent Cross Country league has already attracted hundreds of athletes to Llandaff Fields Cardiff (where the Gwent League joined up with the series opener of the British Athletics Cardiff Cross Challenge), Pembrey Country Park in November, the club's match hosting which incorporated the West Wales Cross Country Championships, Parc Bryn Bach in Tredegar in December and the recent fixture at Pontypool Park.

Races will be held for those in the under 11 age group from 11:50 through to senior & master ages which concludes with the men at 15:00. More details is available for Bristol via THIS LINK as well as timetable and course map at the bottom of this event section.

Welsh Athletics are delighted to announce a strong team of 34 junior athletes to compete at this weekend's Welsh Athletics Indoor International on Sunday (March 3rd). The international match sees Junior teams from Wales and England compete, with senior guest athletes also invited to compete in specified events.

The team and team managers were officially announced earlier today (Tuesday 26th February)

The team will include Carmarthen's very own Lili Church and Beca Roberts. Both coached by Dorrien Thomas, Lili will go in the high jump whilst Beca will compete in the triple jump.

Third member Osian Roberts will also be in action, in the development event following on from the regional development day in Cardiff last year.

All three have been in fine form over the course of the indoor season including gold winning performances at the West Wales Indoor Athletics Championships and Welsh Athletics Junior Indoor Championships in the past two months. Church and Roberts who are under 17 athletes have been selected a year young and will look forward to competing at a high level event. Pob Lwc!

Elsewhere on Sunday (March 3rd), the Admiral City of Newport Half Marathon will be held and is a major fundraising event for St David's Hospice Care. All proceeds are used to support vital hospice services in South East Wales.

The route showcases some of the iconic landmarks of the City of Newport, and grows in popularity every year. It starts at 9am in the morning and begins in the heart of the city centre on Commercial Street.

The event is also complimented by a Family Fun Run so that all the family can get involved.

The Admiral City of Newport Half Marathon website has more information ahead of Sunday.
