Event Results Round-Up: Club, Schools, Regional & International (7th - 30th July)

In the latest round-up this month (July), there's been plenty going on for club athletes of all ages across track and field, road running, trail and mountain running at club, regional and international level - in no fewer than fifteen different events.

There's been an action-packed last few weeks of competition on the track - Welsh Schools NASUWT Cup & Plate final, SIAB Schools Track & Field International, Welsh Inter-Regional Track & Field Championships, Welsh Athletics Open Meeting, Youth Development League and British Milers Club races - just to name a few. Off track road running races have included the Nantgaredig 5K, Ammanford 10K, Swansea Bay Summer Series, Rabbit Run, Llangunnor 5K, Poppit Sands 5K, Welsh Mountain Championships and Llanwrda to Caio Ad Clad race.

Below are the Carmarthen Harriers club results from events held between July 7th and July 30th at Nantgaredig, Ammanford, Aberdare, Swansea, Birmingham, Grangemouth, Bridgend, Llangunnor, Caernarfon, Poppit Sands, Exeter, Llanwrda and Cardiff.

Nantgaredig 5K Fun Run + junior fun run (Friday 7th July)

A great night was had on Friday 7th July at the annual Nantgaredig 5K Fun Run, junior race and summer fair at Nantgaredig Rugby Club. The 5K saw Ifan and Jake finish in second and third overall.

Ammanford 10K Road Race 2023 (Sunday 9th July)

The same weekend saw the Ammanford 10K road race return to Ammanford Recreation Ground and surrounding area on Sunday 9th July in an event which saw Dewi Griffiths break the course record.

Welsh Schools NASUWT U14 & U16 Cup & Plate Final 2023 - Ron Jones Stadium, Aberdare (Wednesday 12th July)

At one of the biggest grass roots competitions for secondary schools in the summer term, the midweek Welsh Schools NASUWT Cymru Wales Cup & Plate Finals took place at the Ron Jones Stadium in Aberdare on Wednesday 12th July.

Seven schools and eight teams from Dyfed qualified to represent the District in Aberdare, with a few club athletes competing.

James Bentley - 300m (38.36) & 4 x 100m

Megan Williams - 1500m (5:29.39); Triple Jump (8.49m) & 4 x 100m

Swansea Bay 5K Summer Series - Swansea (Wednesday 12th July)

The third race of the Paul Popham Running Club Swansea Bay 5K summer series was held after previous events in the months of May and June.

British Milers Club Grand Prix - Birmingham University (Wednesday 12th July)

British Milers Club held its latest Grand Prix meeting at Birmingham University track on Wednesday 12th July, and saw Iestyn Williams run a great personal best time over the 1500m distance, not far off the current club record.

SIAB Schools Track & Field International 2023 - Grangemouth Stadium, Scotland (Saturday 15th July)

The Welsh Schools team travelled North to Scotland on Saturday 15th July for this year’s edition of the Schools’ International Athletic Board’s U17 Track & Field International.

It saw the top athletes from Welsh Schools, English Schools, Irish Schools and hosts Scottish Schools compete at Grangemouth Stadium near Falkirk. A team of 60 athletes were selected to represent the Welsh Schools Athletic Association team in this traditional showpiece event.

Welsh Schools produced one of its best overall results to date at this annual international, with 17 medals returning home and a third-place finish in the team standings. There were three winning performances, five silver and nine bronze medals presented, surpassing the thirteen picked up in Belfast on the same weekend 12 months ago.

Two of our endurance runners were selected in the team after both picking up victories at the recent Welsh Schools National Championships in Cardiff. They were joined by two other Dyfed Schools athletes in Ffion Mabey and Darcy Coslett.

Rabbit Run Wales Junior Races - Merthyr Mawr, Bridgend (Saturday 15th July)

The Rabbit Run Wales 7.5 mile Trail Race took place in Bridgend which included the toddler dash, junior and fun run races.

Getting involved in the junior race were Tomos Cai Davies, Paige-lily Williams and Tayla Williams, pictured.

 

Welsh Inter-Regional Track & Field Championships 2023 - Ron Jones Stadium, Aberdare (Sunday 16th July)

The 2023 edition of the Welsh Inter-Regional Track & Field Championships (West, South, East and North Wales) took place in Aberdare on Sunday 16th July.

44 West Wales athletes from half a dozen clubs, including eight from Carmarthen Harriers (U15, U17, U20 & Senior age groups) represented the region at the Ron Jones Stadium with many fine performances, individually and in the 4 x 100m/medley relays.

Llangunnor 5K Fun Run (Sunday 16th July)

Sixty runners turned out to Llangunnor, not far from Carmarthen on Sunday morning for its 5K fun run.

Welsh Athletics Sprints & Field Events Open Meeting - Ron Jones Stadium, Aberdare (Wednesday 19th July)

Ron Jones Stadium in Aberdare hosted the third Welsh Athletics Sprints Open this season, with the shot, javelin and long jump field events also added in this time. Club athletes competed in the 100m, 200m, 300m, long jump and javelin events.

Welsh Athletics Junior Mountain Running Championships 2023 - Canolfan y Fron / Community Centre (Saturday 22nd July)

The Welsh Athletics Junior Mountain Running Championships took place at Canolfan Y Fron, near Caernarfon on Saturday 22nd July.

Making the long journey to North Wales were Nansi Griffiths (under 15 girls), Finley Bruce (under 17 men) and Steffan Davies (under 20 men). Griffiths and Bruce were the first back in their respective age groups, whilst Davies was in sixth.

 

Poppit Sands 5K Series - Race 1 (Tuesday 25th July)

July was the return of the Poppit Sands 5K Series over a multi terrain course, with the first of three races in the next month held on Tuesday evening 25th July.

Upcoming 5K & Junior races will be at the same venue on Tuesday 8th August and Tuesday 22nd August at 7pm/7:30pm.

 

British Milers Club Grand Prix - Exeter (Tuesday 25th July)

The next British Milers Club grand prix meeting was at Exeter track on Tuesday 25th July, with three Harriers endurance athletes making the journey down to South West England in midweek.

Llanwrda to Caio Ad Clad race (Friday 28th July)

This 7.5-mile walk, jog and run event made its return on Friday 28th July in memory of Arwel Davies with three from the club entering and all finishing in the top half positions.

UK Youth Development League Midland Promotion Match - Cardiff International Sports Stadium (Sunday 30th July)

The UK Youth Development League - Midland division in 2023 ended on Sunday 30th July with the promotion match fixture at a wet Cardiff International Sports Stadium in Leckwith.

The ten Under 17 and under 20 athletes from the club were competing as part of the West Wales composite team in the red and black vest of the region.
