A busy summer of athletics fixtures continued for Carmarthen Harriers members, participating at various track and field and road running events in the second half of August.
From Pembrokeshire to Loughborough and Swansea to Cardiff, athletes of all ages produced great results at club and International level representing Wales as the summer athletics season came to a close this weekend.
Below are the Carmarthen Harriers club results from events held between August 13th and September 1st at Poppit Sands, Tonypandy, Eton, Crosswell, St Clears, Deeside, Swansea, Cilycwm, Manchester, Cardiff x2, Warrington, Kidderminster, Exeter and Loughborough.
Poppit Sands 5K Summer Series - Poppit Sands (Tuesday 13th August)
The Poppit Sands 5K Summer Series concluded in Pembrokeshire. Alex Ladd and Gethin Thomas led the way in the junior 2K as they improved on their times from race 1 with 8:43 and 8:51 respectively. Erica Broome (10:38) and Alys Tremlett (11:08) were first and third in the girls' 10 and under category.
Running the adult 5K multi-terrain course which followed were Steffan Bridger (19:40), Tom Bridger (20:35) and Liz Tremlett (22:19).
Tonypandy Track Classic - Tonypandy (Tuesday 13th August)
At the first Tonypandy Track Classic on Wednesday evening 14th August, Paige-lily Williams was third in the under 13 girls age group 1000m with a time of 3:32.24 at the start of the evening's programme.
Ras Beca - Crosswell, Pembrokeshire (Saturday 17th August)
Ras Beca Trail Race took place on Saturday near Crosswell in North Pembrokeshire. In the 5 mile, Steffan Davies was second overall in 42:49 whilst Huw Davies also came second in the M50 category with 51:06.
England Athletics Home Countries International - Thames Valley Athletic Centre (Saturday 17th August)
An annual under 20 end-of-season International returned on Saturday 17th August with three members representing the Welsh squad. England Athletics hosted the Home Countries International at the Thames Valley Athletics Centre in Windsor.
Mia Lloyd was in action in the women’s ambulant discus, throwing 15.92m in the sixth and final round.
Also in the field, Jessica Lee’s best leap of 5.95m in the women’s long jump was the furthest of the competition.
Elli-May Williams ran the first leg of the women’s 4 x 100m sprint relay, in which the Welsh quartet clocked 47.85.
St Clears 10K Road Race (Sunday 18th August)
For the first time, the West Wales 10K Road Running Championships were incorporated into the St Clears 10K. Finishing as the third open male was Joshua Barnett in a new personal best time of 39:36, who as a result picked up bronze in the West Wales championships.
North Wales Endurance Open - Deeside Stadium (Tuesday 20th August)
Cerys Fitzpatrick and Gwen Fitzpatrick made the journey to Deeside College track for the North Wales Endurance Open Meeting.
Cerys' time of 6:29.91 in the 1000m Walk was a new personal best. Gwen competed in the two field events - long jump (2.72m) and shot put (3.07m)
Tri Hard 5K On The Bay - Swansea Bay (Thursday 22nd August)
Thursday evening was the Tri Hard Harriers 5K On The Bay. Making her club debut was Amy Tucker who finished in 23:31.
Cilycwm 5 mile and junior fun run (Friday 23rd August)
In the North of the county at Cilycwm near Llandovery, the 5 mile and junior run was back.
Liz Tremlett completed the 5 mile in 39:52. Meanwhile in the children’s 1 loop, Dylan Williams was the second junior male (18:53). Teammates Davy Richards (22:16) and Tayla Williams (25:51) were also competing.
Manchester Senior Track & Field International - Manchester Regional Arena (Saturday 24th August)
In the penultimate weekend of the track and field season, Wales fielded a team at the Manchester International in SportCity on Saturday.
Mia Lloyd was in action in the women’s ambulant discus, throwing 16.01m in the second round. Elli-May Williams ran the first leg of the women’s 4 x 100m sprint relay, in which the same Welsh quartet who competed at the Home Countries International the previous week recorded 48.04.
Carmarthen Harriers' Carol Jones was the Welsh Endurance coach and women's team manager.
Adidas Podium Home Nations 5K - Bute Park (Saturday 24th August)
In the Welsh Capital at a home event, Angharad Davies represented the Welsh team at the Adidas Podium Home Nations 5K in Bute Park, Cardiff. With a clocking of 16:14 over the three-laps, Davies claimed a top-10 finish in ninth to help Wales to second in the team standings.
Terry Davies Memorial Open - Warrington (Saturday 24th August)
At the Terry Davies Memorial Open in Warrington, Cerys Fitzpatrick took another 20 seconds off her 1000m Walk personal best, whilst Gwen Fitzpatrick competed in the 75m and the long jump.
Kidderminster and Stourport AC Mike Lambert Open and Exeter Harriers Open Meeting (Monday 26th - Tuesday 27th August)
The Bank Holiday weekend ended with in England at the Kidderminster and Stourport AC Mike Lambert Open.
Tayla Williams competed in the under 11 girls' quadrathlon which was made up of the 75m (14.31), 600m (2:32.70), Long Jump (2.32m) and Howler (7.05m) tallying 91 points.
Paige-lily Williams' three individual events included the 70m Hurdles (13.68) and 800m (2:45.83) before going beyond 6 metres for the first time in the shot with 6.23m.
Both also travelled South to the Exeter Harriers open meeting the day after on Tuesday where they competed in the 75m (13.83), 100m (15.50), 600m (2:35.91), hurdles, long jump (3.61m) and javelin (15.95m).
UK School Games - Athletics - Loughborough University (Friday 30th - Saturday 31st August)
The final weekend of the summer track and field season in Leicestershire… and it saw four Harriers members gain International vests at the 2024 UK School Games National Finals, which was back in the calendar for the first time in two years.
They competed for one of the eight Tri-Stars - including Atlanta, Tokyo, Sydney and London - in the discus, long jump and para shot on Day 1 followed by the 100m and 4 x 100m on the second day.
Friday morning saw the girls' discus begin proceedings on the field. A month on from the Schools International match, Dolly Evans again threw beyond 30 metres to 30.88m.
Beatrice Morgan's first event of the weekend was the girls' long jump. Her best of the competition came in the second round with 5.37m to round off a successful season.
A string of consistent measurements saw Jac Sheehan save the best until last in the boys' para shot put. Based on Raza points, Sheehan claimed gold with 8.34m.
Winning her third Welsh vest of the month, Elli-May Williams was selected over the short and fast 100m sprint. She stopped the clock in 13.02 seconds.
Williams and Morgan ended the track programme on Saturday lunchtime by joining their teammates for the 4 x 100m and Universal relays.
Two of the club’s coaches, Paul Mabey and Ffion Mabey also travelled as the Welsh Para throws coaches support.
North Wales Open Meeting - Queensway Stadium, Wrexham (Saturday 31st August)
After spectating the previous day across the border, under 11 member Florence Morgan took advantage of competition opportunity at the North Wales open meeting incorporating the junior league on Saturday at Queensway Stadium in Wrexham.
Her day began in the opening field event with a leap of 2.94m in the long jump, followed by a first trial best of 4.18m in the combined shot put shortly after.
On the track over the 600m distance, Florence clocked a new lifetime best of 2.13.61 to place second in North East Wales.
Brecon Carreg CDF Cardiff 10K - Cardiff City Centre (Sunday 1st September)
The first day of September and the start of a busy autumn and winter season on the roads. Sunday morning 1st September saw three Carmarthen Harriers endurance athletes travel to the Welsh Capital for the Brecon Carreg CDF Cardiff 10K.
Recording great times over the distance were Joshua Barnett (37:20), Non Morgan (44:06) and Sion Rowlands (48:47).
