Dyfed Schools Athletic Association Glyn Davies Memorial Trophy - 2023 Recipient Announced

The Dyfed Schools Athletic Association Glyn Davies Memorial Trophy in 2023 has been awarded to Iwan Thomas (Coleg Sir Gar / Carmarthen Harriers).

Iwan has enjoyed a very successful and busy season in the last 12 months across track and field, cross country, road and mountain running competitions, representing the Dyfed Schools district as well as Welsh Schools and Wales at international level.

In 2023 Iwan was

1st in the UK U17 1500m steeplechase championship.

1st in the British and Irish under 17 mountain running championship in Peebles Scotland (10
September 2023).

Ranked No1 in Wales in 2023 at under 17 level in 1500m,3000m and 1500m steeplechase.

Won in 2023 5 Welsh or Welsh Schools gold medals in Welsh individual championships.

In 2023 Represented Wales or Welsh schools (6 times) at cross country, road, track, and mountain running.

2023 1st Under 17 Welsh Junior Mountain Championship (Red Kite Devils Bridge)

2023 8th Mountain Running World Cup in Annecy France (year young)

2023 1st competing for Wales on 10 September 2023 in the British and Irish Mountain Running championships in Peebles Scotland (he was second last year)

Cross Country

2023 1st Welsh Schools Cross Country Championships – Middle Boys

2023 2nd SIAB Schools International – Middle Boys. (Welsh boys team captain)

2023 2nd Welsh Under 17 Cross Country Championships

2023 3rd UKA Under 17 Cross Challenge Series

Track

2023 4th SIAB Schools Boys International 1500m steeplechase

2023 1st Welsh Schools Middle Boys Steeplechase championship

2023 1st Welsh under 17 1500m steeplechase

2023 1st Welsh under 17 3000m championship

2023 1st UK under 17 1500m steeplechase championship

2023 4th UK under 17 3000m championship

Road

Ran for Wales in the 2023 London Mini Marathon

So far Iwan has won 14 Welsh or Welsh schools gold medals in individual championships
and represented Welsh schools or Wales on 12 occasions in his athletics career.

Dyfed Schools Athletic Association in November 2015 decided to set up an annual Glyn Davies award in memory of Glyn who had been treasurer of Dyfed Schools AA for 16 years.

He was remembered for his support of Dyfed Schools teams at the Welsh schools cross country and athletics championships and in particular standing at the entrance to the Carmarthen Athletics Track collecting the gate money at Dyfed competitions.

The Glyn Davies Award is awarded annually to the Dyfed School athlete who has given the greatest contribution to Dyfed schools in that year.

The award was presented earlier this week by Mr Berian Davies and Dr Hedydd Davies, Dyfed Schools AA Chairman and Secretary at the Ivy Bush Hotel in Carmarthen.
