December & New Year Event Results Round-Up (15th December 2024 - 12th January 2025)

The month of December welcomed back popular festive events in 2024, followed by the start of the early 2025 January competitions held indoors and on the road in Carmarthenshire and further afield.

Below are the festive and new year results held between December 15th and January 12th at Cardiff, Gorslas/Haverfordwest, Llandeilo, Llandysul, Swansea, Loughborough.

Cardiff Met Indoor Christmas Classic Grand Prix - National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff (Sunday 15th December)

Before the Christmas period, Sunday 15th December, Cardiff Metropolitan University held its first of three grand prix events at National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff. The annual Christmas Classic was back in the calendar in the week leading up to Christmas Day.

The day began in the field, where Ben Bowen threw a new personal best of 10.39m in the shot put.

The Welsh 3000m indoor championships were incorporated into the event. Over fifteen laps of the track, Finley Bruce and Macsen Toogood finished in 9:21:58 and 9:29:07 respectively.

Over the same distance, Jessica Hyland (10:18:26) and under 17 bronze-medallist Sali Owen (10:57:39) lined up in the female races.

 

 

Christmas Day morning parkrun - Llyn Llech Owain / Haverfordwest (Wednesday 25th December)

The traditional Christmas morning parkrun attracts hundreds of runners. Club athletes taking part in Llyn Llech Owain were Sam Griffiths, Sion Rowlands, Cerys Fitzpatrick, Gwen Fitzpatrick, Tayla Williams, Manon Phillips and Paige-lily Williams.

Meanwhile, William Harries, Tom Bridger and Steffan Bridger completed 5K at Haverfordwest.

 

 

New Year's Eve 10 Miler & 10K & Llandysul New Year's Eve 5K Run - Llandeilo / Llandysul (Tuesday 31st December)

On New Year's Eve, Tuesday 31st December, two annual events returned to West Wales with the New Year's Eve 10 Miler & 10K at Tregib Sport Facilities and the Llandysul New Year's Eve 5K.

At Llandeilo, Esme Lynock was the first under 21 female to finish the 10K (50:18).

There was a 1-2-3 in the 10 mile for the same category, with Steffan Davies (1:02:46), Jake Lynock (1:04:59) and Joshua Barnett (1:07:16) finishing the year on a high.

Also winning his age category was Huw Davies, who clocked 1:19:24.

In the North of the county at Llandysul, Luke Owen was the second under 18 male home with 21:35.

 

 

Welsh Athletics U13, U15 & U17 Junior Indoor Open incorporating West Wales 600m Walk, 800m & 1500m regional championships - Day 2 - National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff (Sunday 5th January)

The 2025 Indoor Athletics opener in Wales saw Day 2 of the Welsh Athletics Junior Indoor Open (Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 age groups) take place at the National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff on Sunday 5th January.

60m, 60m Hurdles, 800m, 1500m, 600m Walk, Long Jump, Pole Vault and Shot Put events took centre stage at Cyncoed Campus.

The Welsh Athletics Junior Indoor Open fixtures incorporated the West Wales 600m Walk, 800m and 1500m Regional Championships.

Thirteen Carmarthen Harriers members battled the wintry conditions and travelled to the Welsh Capital to enter the 60m, 60m Hurdles, 600m Walk, 800m and 1500m along with long jump and shot, with six regional medals won.

West Wales Indoor Regional Athletics Championships 2025 - Swansea University Indoor Athletics Track (Saturday 11th January)

Day 1 of the 2025 West Wales Indoor Athletics Championships returned to Swansea University Indoor Athletics Track on Saturday 11th January Field events / Jumps took centre stage at the University Sports Campus.

Featuring the long jump, high jump and pole vault disciplines, there were regional medals won and personal bests and season bests also achieved by members.

Day 2 will see the 60m, 60m Hurdles and Shot contested in the middle of February, with entries open until Monday 10th February.

Cardiff Met Non Thomas New Year Grand Prix - Endurance & BMC - National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff (Sunday 12th January)

Following the Christmas classic event last month, Cardiff Metropolitan University organised its second of three grand prix event at National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff on Sunday 12th January - focussing on endurance.

Incorporating the British Milers Club endurance races, Macsen Toogood and Jessica Hyland competed in the four-lap 800m, recording times of and 2:01.10 and 2:18.76 respectively, the latter a lifetime best.

In the open event earlier in the day, Sion Rowlands clocked 4:44.83 for the 1500m.

 

Loughborough Indoor Open (Sunday 12th January)

Loughborough University hosted its indoor open fixture over the weekend of 11th and 12th January. On the second day, Jessica Lee was in action in pool C of the long jump, opening the year with a leap of 5.80m.
