Cross country running and the JH Collins Gwent Cross Country League - written by Hedydd Davies

I have been involved in cross country running for over 65 years and I know how much it has helped me in my athletics career and as a person.

It takes guts and dedication to turn out on a cold snowy winter’s afternoon and run on a hilly muddy cross country course miles away from home. It is certainly character building.

Athletes train to compete.

Athletes join athletics clubs in order to compete in inter club competition and represent the club in Regional, Welsh and UK championships.

The more competition that is available for the club athlete the better and plenty of appropriate competition at all levels from local up to international level.

Athletes improve through competing often against better athletes.

Other sports, for example, in football, rugby, netball and rugby members are involved in short team games and there are many regular matches for youngsters throughout the season. There is also a social side with these popular sports.

Cross country inter club competition

In the UK there are very many well established cross country leagues. The JH Collins Gwent Cross Country league is an excellent example of a League which started in 1963 and is still going strong and is well supported in its five events a year by many Welsh and SW England Clubs.

Gwent Cross Country League

For the endurance athlete of all ages from 9 to 80 the Gwent League provides inter club cross country competition for club athletes of all ability on five occasions in the winter at different venues.

The League helps the better athlete to prepare for the Welsh schools inter schools cross country championships, the Welsh schools cross country championship, the Welsh inter regional cross country championships, Welsh cross country championships and the UK inter county cross country championships.

The Gwent Cross Country League has been in existence for 58 years. We have a lot to be grateful for the work put in by its founders  Capt. George Crump MBE and John H Collins. Many outstanding Welsh athletes have started in this League.

On a Gwent Cross Country League Day, it is a pleasure to see the vast number of Club tents and the real enjoyment shown by the many club athletes and supporters present. Long may the Gwent Cross Country League continue.

Personal experience of a Cross Country League

I have  been fortunate to have been a member of four outstanding athletics clubs (Carmarthen and District Harriers Athletics Club 68 years, Birchfield Harriers 5 years, Thames Valley Harriers 12 years and Sale Harriers 2 years) as well as two University cross country teams (Birmingham university 6 years and Oxford University 1 year).

In my 34 years athletics career I competed in over one thousand races at cross country, indoor, track, road and fell/mountain. Well over 95% of these events were as members of a Club team.

As a senior athlete for 25 years, I took part in the winter months in every cross country league match (5 times a year) possible. In the 1960’s and 1970’s all the top international distance athletes would turn out for their Clubs in League cross country races. The Leagues I competed for my Club in were;-

Birmingham and District League (6 years), London Metropolitan League (12 years), Manchester and District League (2 years) and Gwent League (5 years)

I have no doubt at all that the experience of competing in these top class competitive cross country leagues races helped me to improve from being an ordinary athlete into a Welsh senior cross country champion and to compete for Wales in six World ICCU cross country championships and three Brussels Martini international cross country races.

Personal experience of the Gwent Cross Country League

I came back from London to Carmarthen in 1979 and for five years competed for Carmarthen Harriers in the Gwent Cross Country League. My best performance was in October 1981 when as a veteran I finished 14th overall in the senior race at Blaise Castle, Bristol. That evening I drove up to Llanberis and the following morning finished ninth in the first Snowdonia marathon.

In 1985 I got Carmarthen Harriers to be seriously involved in the Gwent Cross Country League and as the Harriers chairman (1981-2018) organised from 1985 onwards all the Carmarthen and District Harriers Athletics teams at all the Gwent League matches as well as organising five Gwent League matches at the United Counties showground at Nantyci, Carmarthen. In that period I did not miss a single Gwent League race.

It was always a pleasure to take the Harriers teams away in our sponsors’ coaches Davies Bros and Ffoshelig Coaches. Many of our members would travel long distances to catch the coach in either Blue Street or Lammas Street in Carmarthen. Athletes from Aberaeron would always be the first on the coach and the local Carmarthen boys would always be late.

I learnt a lot about team management and there was always a rush to book the back seats of the coach. On two occasions I left athletes behind at race venues, one in Bristol and two in Swansea. However, all ended well. I would always be in the morning of the event at the coach pick up point 30 minutes before the coach departure and in the evening would wait until the last Harrier athlete had been collected.

I am proud of the achievements of my Carmarthen Harriers athletes in the Gwent Cross Country League (35 individual champions and  41 team champions).

It has been an honour and a privilege to have been involved with the Gwent Cross Country League for the best part of forty years.

The League would not have been so successful without the hard work and dedication of so many volunteers in the last 63 years.

Carmarthen and District Harriers Athletics Club and the JH Collins Gwent Cross Country League

Captain George Crump and John Collins in 1963 formed the Pontypool and District Cross Country League and two years later it became the Gwent Cross Country League with many clubs from SW England and S Wales joining the League.

Carmarthen and District Harriers Athletics Club have certainly been regular members of the League since the mid 1980’s.

Detailed results are only available since 2000. In the period between 1963 and 1997 only the winners and runner up results are available. No results between 1997 and 2000.

Hosting of Gwent Cross Country League match events

So far Carmarthen Harriers have hosted nine Gwent Cross Country League competitions.

At Pembrey Country Park on 4 December 2021, 10 November 2019; 3 December 2018 and 4 March 2017. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic there were no Gwent League matches in the 2020/2021season.

At the United Counties Showground 1991, 1996, 16 March 2002, 20 March 2004, 14 March 2009. Due to snow the Gwent League match in February 2006 at the Show Ground was cancelled.

The Showground course was around two big fields with the main traffic entrance and exit straight onto the main road.

Carmarthen Harriers also hosted and organised the following major events at the Showground.

1992 Celtic Cross Country International

1994 UK Ladies Cross Country international

1995 Welsh Cross Country championships and Welsh inter county Cross Country championships

Summary of individual and team results since 2000
