Cross Country & Indoor Athletics Results Round-Up (13th January - 21st January)

Locally, West Wales' regional indoor athletics championships was back in the calendar recently with two event days over two separate weekends in Swansea.

There was also the penultimate British Athletics Cross Challenge Series (Home Countries Cross Country) and the second Cardiff Met grand prix new year open meeting.

Three Dyfed areas - Pembrokeshire, Llanelli and Ceredigion - hosted their area cross country championships during two midweek days.

Below are the latest results from events held between January 13th and January 21st at Swansea, London, Cardiff and Cilycwm.

West Wales Indoor Regional Athletics Championships 2024 - Swansea University Indoor Athletics Track (Saturday 13th January & Saturday 20th January)

The 2024 West Wales Indoor Athletics Championships returned to Swansea University Indoor Athletics Track over two weekends - Saturday 13th January (60m, 60m Hurdles and Shot) and Saturday 20th January (Field - Jumps) for all age groups from U11 to Seniors.

There were more than 200 athletes who competed in Swansea and among them were 23 Carmarthen Harriers athletes.

18 regional medals were won and plenty of personal bests and season bests were also achieved at this successful event which saw many athletes in the region make their competition debuts.

Thank you to the club officials and parents from the club who volunteered their time on the field events.

Home Countries Cross Country International / British Athletics Cross Challenge Series - Event 4 - Parliament Hill, London (Saturday 20th January)

Carmarthen Harriers’ Iwan Thomas, Finley Bruce and Ifan Bowen represented Wales at the Home Countries Cross Country in conjunction with the fourth British Athletics Cross Challenge Series at Parliament Hill Fields in London.

On Saturday 20th January, Thomas crossed the line in second individually (20:02) with Bruce and Bowen in 16th and 24th with 21:23 and 22:12 respectively in the under 17 men’s race over a distance of 6km.

Endurance coach Neil Thomas was one of the Welsh team managers in the English Capital.

 

 

Dyfed Secondary Schools Area Cross Country Championships - (Tuesday 16th January - Wednesday 17th January)

Pembrokeshire, Llanelli and Ceredigion schools held its respective cross country area events at Haverfordwest, Pembrey, Llangrannog on Tuesday 16th January and Wednesday 17th January.

Due to the icy weather the day after, the Brianne Schools event at Carmarthen was cancelled.

The first 10 in each of the races will go forward to represent their area at the Dyfed Secondary Schools & Colleges Cross Country Championships on the new date of Tuesday 30th January.

 

Cardiff Met Non Thomas New Year Indoor Grand Prix - National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff (Sunday 22nd January)

Following the Christmas classic event, Cardiff Metropolitan University organised its second grand prix event at National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff on Sunday 21st January - the Non Thomas New Year Open.

Incorporating the British Milers Club endurance races, Jessica Hyland clocked a new personal best of 2:19:92 in heat three of the 800m over four laps of the track.

Over in the field, Lili Church cleared a best of 1.65m in the women's high jump.

 

Cilycwm 5 mile Fun Run (Saturday 13th January)

There was a ninth-place finish for Jimmy Davis at the Cilycwm 5 mile fun run in 38:20.
