2021-2022 Indoor Athletics Season begins at NIAC in Cardiff

The 2021-2022 indoor season began on Sunday 7th November with the Welsh Athletics and Welsh Schools AA Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 Indoor Combined Events Championships at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cyncoed, Cardiff.

The weekend just gone saw NIAC indoor track host the first organised competition in Wales in 20 months.

Under 18 and Under 16 athletes competed in a Pentathlon (5 events) whilst the Under 14 athletes contested the Quadrathlon (4 events).

130 entrants along with spectators and coaches arrived at NIAC early on Sunday morning ready for competition at the campus sporting facility which began at 11:00 and concluded shortly before 17:00.

Events on the track were the 60m Hurdles, 200m and 800m whilst on the field, Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put were the trio of disciplines contested to make up the Quadrathlon or Pentathlon.

The Schools International Combined Events Championships takes place this year at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on Saturday 4th December 2021. Following on from the Cardiff event, Welsh Schools team managers and committee members will select a team of six girls and six boys to make the trip up North for the International in four weeks' time.

 

CARMARTHEN HARRIERS ATHLETES & INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCES:

Three Carmarthen Harriers members entered the indoor season opener at Cardiff on Sunday. There were a number of fantastic performances and new personal bests.

Jess and Beatrice finished in third position in the under 18 and under 14 girls respectively and as a result won individual bronze medals, whilst Luned was in tenth overall. Da iawn!

  • JESSICA LEE (3,341pts) - Under 18:

60m Hurdles (9.38); 800m (2:29.31); High Jump (1.50m); Long Jump (5.53m); Shot Put (9.19m)

  • LUNED DEFIS (1,684pts) - Under 16:

60m Hurdles (11.12); 800m (3:27.79); High Jump (1.29m); Long Jump (3.98m); Shot Put (6.69m)

  • BEATRICE MORGAN (1,807pts) - Under 14:

60m Hurdles (9.92); 800m (2:56.05); Long Jump (4.07m); Shot Put (7.28m)

Coming up next will be the first day of two Welsh Athletics Indoor Junior Open Meetings incorporating the West Wales, East Wales and South Wales regional championships. Held in December and January, the opening day of competition will be held on Sunday 5th December at NIAC Indoor Athletics Centre followed by the second day early in the New Year.
