MORE SCHOOL NEWS / MWY O NEWYDDION YSGOLION: Primary Schools Cross Country Action in Dyfed...

On Wednesday March 9th, sporty school children from across 17 local primary schools in the Llanelli area came together at Penygaer Playing Fields on the edge of the town to compete in the Llanelli Junior Schools Cross Country Competition, organised by the Dyfed Club Network Officer, Rebecca Gatt. The original date of 27th January was postponed due to the bad weather forecast on the day.

Schools participating: Llangennech Juniors, Dewi Sant, Y Castell, Penygaer, Parc Y Tywyn, Y Ffwrnes, St Michaels, Bynea, Pembrey, Brynsierfel, Trimsaran, Pentip, Brynteg, Old Road, Lakefield, Pwll, Mynyddygarreg.

After a spell of heavy rain on the Tuesday evening, the event did go ahead at the second time of asking despite the muddy and very windy conditions on parts of the course but it seemed that the runners enjoyed themselves! There were eight races on the event programme - starting with the year 3's through to year 6 (boys and girls) The course was flat and fast ranging from 1000m to 1500m Year 3 & 4 did 1 big lap, Year 5 did 1 small and 1 big lap and the Year 6 ran 2 big laps of the field. There were big fields in all the races and this resulted in a fantastic 483 runners crossing the finishing line with a smile on their face, cheered on by their parents, teachers & school mates who made plenty of noise keeping the athletes going.

Rebecca Gatt: "Diolch yn Fawr i chi gyd am ddod. Thank you very much for coming to the Llanelli Primary Cross Country. I hope you all enjoyed. I really enjoyed meeting you all and seeing the children so excited! We had 17 schools from the area attending and a total of 483 children running - great turn out! I hope to repeat this in future and either make it an annual event or possibly a small league.

Thank you for arranging your teams, organising buses and braving the not so pleasant weather! Thank you also to Llanelli AC for helping me set up, organise and run the day; Coedcae Comprehensive School students for marshalling, running and doing such a great job at making sure the afternoon ran smoothly; and one more thanks to the two Steffan's from Ysgol Dewi Sant for making such great hares!"

The top 10 in each race received an award along with the winning team - top 3 received a medal with the remaining 7 collecting a certificate congratulating them on their achievement.
