Following a very busy weekend of road running and triathlon at two corners of South Wales...we take you back to last Thursday evening where the first of the season's Throws Foundation Sessions took place in Carmarthen.

As part of Welsh Athletics' Throws Foundation Coaching Programme, there was an excellent opportunity last Thursday Evening, 4th October for shot put, discus and hammer throwers in West Wales to take part in a Throws Foundation Session focusing on drills that can be done during the Winter, and the training that should supplement during the off-season.

After delivering a shot put master class throws evening back at the end of May, it was great to see Welsh Athletics' Ryan Spencer Jones, also coach and Commonwealth Games athlete, back in Carmarthen last week. Taking the session were Cardiff AAC's U23 Hammer Thrower Jac Palmer alongside Shot Putter Lucy Griffiths from Pembrokeshire, but also trains in Cardiff.

It gave athletes and coaches informative tips on developing and progressing through to the 2019 summer competition. It was a great chance for the region's throwers and coaches to meet Ryan, participate in a session and discuss with others how best to develop their athletes throughout the winter months.

This free, two-hour session was an open invitation to all the West Wales club including Pembrokeshire Harriers, Carmarthen Harriers, Llanelli AC, Swansea Harriers and Neath Harriers, as well as the off-track running clubs.

The first half of the session saw those present work on useful warm up drills and core work outside the circle, under Jones, Palmer and Griffiths' guidance. These important techniques included individual stretches as well as team work. Then, they moved to the other side of the track to use the long jump pit as well as working on short sprints which is an important factor in all disciplines of athletics.

Ryan hopes to return to Carmarthen at the beginning of next year to hold a Regional Development Throws Day for West Wales clubs on a full day's session during the weekend. This will involve classroom, practical training and a talk from a guest athlete. More Details will be posted here as and when they come through.
