The Amman Valley Sprint Triathlon was the opening event of the 2018 Healthy Life Activities Triathlon Series on Sunday 15th April, with entries sold out weeks in advance. We report from the morning's action in Ammanford earlier...

Mae'r tymor triathlon wedi cyrraedd yn Sir Gaerfyrddin, yn dechrau yn gynharach bore yma yn Rhydaman wrth i dros 200 o athletwyr gymryd rhan yn Triathlon Sprint Dyffryn Aman. Roedd wedi cael ei drefnu gan Gweithgareddau Bywyd Iach.

Senior Triathletes got their 2018 campaigns underway earlier this morning (Sunday 15th) with the first event of the Healthy Life Activities 2018 series - the Amman Valley Sprint Triathlon at Ammanford Leisure Centre. Having attracted 250 athletes over the years and is by now a firm favourite, the entry number was boosted to 300 this year and this was easily sold out with 3 months to go.

This just shows how popular the event has come to athletes and supporters alike! It was ideal for 1st time athletes and those looking to start their season with a short sprint triathlon which included chip timing and full race day equipment. It saw nearly 100 people make their debuts in a sprint triathlon event as well as 190 taking part in the Amman Valley Tri for the first time in 2018.

Carmarthenshire County Council, Amman Valley Harriers, Llanelli Gymnastics Club, St John Ambulance Ammanford, Dyfed Powys Police, Welsh Triathlon, Tri and Enter, Ammanford Leisure Centre staff along with the organisation's family, friends and all marshals all contributed towards the success of the day where they were situated all around the course.

After a lovely sunny day on the Saturday for set up as the locals picked up their numbers at registration, race day turned out to be a totally different day, with grey and cool conditions making it ideal conditions, after early rain cleared. The transition area was placed in the Leisure Centre Car Park with a great atmosphere as usual at the venue as other athletes encouraged those behind them through to the end,. All finishers' were rewarded with a 2018 finishers medal.

Former Welsh Rugby Union players Ryan Jones and Shane Williams were amongst those taking part in the Amman Valley.

With the first wave getting underway as early as 7.30am on Sunday morning and continuing until just before 11am, the course facing the competitors first off was a 400m swim (16 lengths) inside the Amman Valley Swimming Pool.

Next up after passing transition was the 16k bike ride up the main road East from Ammanford to Garnant and back, followed by the 5k run which took runners along the new cycle path in Pontaman on a picturesque trail. Returning along the same route, all participants were welcomed home at the Leisure Centre in a grand stand finish where family and friends were waiting!

The Amman Valley Triathlon was the first of five Carmarthenshire Triathlon Series events, where those wanting to be included need to complete four out of the five locations. The series positions will be determined by adding up overall finish positions in each event.

Healthy Life Activities Event Organiser Noelwyn Daniel was pleased with the opening event of the series: "The Amman Valley Sprint Tri again attracted a large number of participants with many regular faces returning year after year. The 300 entries and closing date was reached with 3 months to spare, just showing how popular it has become to all athletes all over South Wales. We saw a truly diverse field of athletes this year which included 95 athletes making their debuts in the sport and nearly 200 taking part in the Amman Valley Tri for the first time."

"Our thanks to all the volunteers, marshals and staff who helped out at the event. We are now looking forward to more exciting races during the season at Carmarthen and Llanelli. Visit the HLA website to find out how you can enter any of the remaining nine events being planned this year for all ages."
