Coverage from Thursday's Midweek action: the second Brianne Schools Cross Country League match at Ysgol Bro Myrddin in Carmarthen.

The schools athletics calendar continued with the second meeting of the Brianne Schools Cross Country League last Thursday (17th) which features the area schools from Dyffryn Aman, Maes Y Gwendraeth, Bro Myrddin, Bro Dinefwr, Dyffryn Taf, QE High and Llandovery College and there were 14 top 3 finishes for the local running club, Carmarthen Harriers. The course around the playing field was heavy and very muddy after the heavy rain and strong winds during the morning, despite the sun making an appearance just in time for the start of the afternoon races.

In the first age group in the Year 7’s – Emma Brazier (Llandovery College) and Frank Morgan (Bro Myrddin) both won comfortably for the successive time well ahead of the rest of the field. Magda Singh (Dyffryn Taf) and Sara Price (Bro Dinefwr) were the next in for the girls while in the boys, Ioan Cressey-Rodgers (Llandovery College) was second and Sam Potter (Maes Y Gwendraeth) was third.

The Year 8’s ran two laps of the tough cross country field. The boys race was dominated by the winner Liam Edwards (Bro Myrddin) and Dafydd Jones (Bro Myrddin) and was then followed in closely by club teammates Jac Chapman (Dyffryn Aman) Cian Williams (Dyffryn Aman) and Morgan Batten (Dyffryn Taf) Talented running duo Daisy Thompson (Bro Myrddin) and Phoebe Davis (Bro Dinefwr) were way out in front in the Year 8 girls race with Daisy just taking the spoils. Gwennan Wright (Dyffryn Taf) filled the third place slot.

For the Year 9 & 10’s, it was a combined race with success for Llandovery College in the girls – where sisters Deryn Cressey-Rodgers and Molly Cressey-Rodgers finishing in first and second respectively. Maddie Morgan (Bro Myrddin) Siwan Jones-Evans (Bro Dinefwr) and Eva Edwards (Bro Myrddin) in the next three positions pushed each other well to the finish.

The final age group of the six race programme were the Year 9 & 10 Boys who had to contend with the hardest underfoot conditions. Continuing his first match victory in Dyffryn Taf, Tomos Rees (Dyffryn Aman) raced clear from the rest of the field to win again. Not too far behind in second was Iwan Glynn (Bro Myrddin) making his first cross country appearance of the season and completing the top three finishes was Lewis Driscoll (QE High)

Dyfed schools athletics now takes a break for Christmas and will see the third Brianne league match take place at Llandeilo as well as the Brianne & Dyfed Cross Country Championships for Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire areas at the start of the New Year.
