The club's first cross country match started off at the Newbridge Field at Bridgend Leisure Centre for round 1 of 5 of the Gwent League season on Sunday 16th October.

Bridgend has always been a challenging course but an enjoyable one, starting off around the field before going over the bridge, through the woods and finishing off in middle of the Bridgend AC athletics track. Before the Senior Men's event, there had been a total of 949 runners in the first nine races, with a large field of over 400 in the final race. It was a dry day with a light wind, different to the heavy rain conditions we had on the drive home back on the M4 back to Carmarthen!

Teams from South Wales and the South West of England found a sunny day in Bridgend for the first Gwent league of the season. 48 Carmarthen Harriers members turned out and were able to dominate many age groups with West Wales medals and qualification for the National Inter Regional races up for grabs.

The most successful team for Carmarthen Harriers on the first day were the Under 13 Boys with two Bro Myrddin athletes Frank Morgan (3rd overall) and Liam Edwards (4th) involved in an exciting sprint off against a Cardiff and Pembroke athlete where all 4 finished within 5 metres after running in a tight group for much of the demanding 2600 metre course. With Dafydd Jones 11th (Bro Myrddin) and Ioan Cressy-Rogers (Llandovery College) and Jac Chapman (Dyffryn Aman) finishing 15th and 16th respectively this was a great team performance that puts the under 13 Harriers at the top of the league.

In the Under 11 Boys Ifan Bowen lead from the start and was beaten by a boy from Brecon losing ground with 100metres to go. He was followed by 2 boys on their debuts in cross country Iwan Thomas (8th ) and Jac Thomas finishing fast for 9th.  Seren Davies led the way for the under 11 girls with a very fine 6th place finish.

In the under 13 girls team mates Daisy Thompson (Bro Myrddin) and Phoebe Davies (Bro Dinefwr) ran fantastic races to finish the race in 3rd and 4th places.

Strength in depth was evident in the Under 15 Boys and Girls with Tomos Rees (Dyffryn Aman) leading the Harriers home in 8th and Gareth Thompson (Preseli) not far behind in 17th. In the Girls Under 15 age group Deryn Cressy-Rogers (Llandovery College) was first home in the Harriers team in 16th and was followed closely behind by Siwan Jones-Evans, Maddie Morgan, Molly Cressy-Rogers and Eva Edwards for a good team result.

The top Under top 17s were club stalwarts and Welsh internationals Ben Thomas 3rd and Elle Kiff 20th both set an excellent example for the younger athletes as they tackled the demanding 6600 metre course.

Finally on the same course as the Under 17/ Under 20 Men was a full Senior Women / veterans team who were led home by the talented Sharon Leech in 19th with Louise Jones-Evans, Jane Batten, Lisa Forest, Andrea Thompson and Gill Edwards all running well on the muddy course. The ever reliable Gordon Orme and Peter Moody in the over 70s category collected a one two finish.

This meeting in 2016 once again incorporated the West Wales Regional championships, where the first 12 athletes from the West in each race were selected to represent the West Region in the Welsh Inter-Regional Championships at Builth Wells on Saturday 10th December. Many harriers would have been given a selection letter. In addition, the first 3 received a region medal.
