Results from the 2016 Dyfed Primary Schools Athletics Championships at Carmarthen on Wednesday 22nd June sponsored by McDonalds and the Rotary Club of Carmarthen.

On a pleasant sunny evening in West Wales after a rather wet and windy start to the day, the 29th annual event attracted 300 athletes and hundreds of spectators from Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion primary schools and has grown every year since Hedydd Davies Carmarthen Harriers Chairman organised the first event twenty six years ago in 1990.

The schools athletics season here in Dyfed continued with the annual Midweek Dyfed Champs in Carmarthen as approximately 30 schools from across the three areas attended. Once again the track was full, car park packed and food were quickly sold, with plenty of local talent out on show amongst the 14 event programme and saw the championships go on till late with the presentations finishing just after 20:00.

Thanks to everyone who helped in any way, to ensure that the meeting flowed including starter Dave James, Timekeepers Brian Alvey, Roy Adams, Marksman Steffan Griffiths, Judges Teachers & Parents , Recorders Ysgol Llanynnwr, LJ Ysgol Griffith Jones, Shot Putt Ysgol Y Dderwen, HJ Carol Jones & Andrew Jenkins, Gate Rotary Club of Carmarthen and Probus, Refreshments Inner Club of Carmarthen, friends and Carmarthen Harriers ladies, Meeting Organiser and Announcer Hedydd Davies, Results Sarah Heckler, Website results and report Nathan Jones, St Johns Ambulance, Carmarthen Leisure Centre steward and our 2 sponsors.

The winners this year for 2016 was Ysgol Y Dderwen who also won this competition a few years ago scoring 40 points. Not far behind were Ysgol Y Castell with 38, Tenby Juniors (33) Griffith Jones (24) and Gelli Aur (23) Scores were very close for the whole event and it came down to the final relays.

Presentation of awards to the top 3 in each event was made by the Mayor and Mayoress of Carmarthen Cllr Wyn Thomas and Mrs Sylvia Perkins along with Ms Coralie Steel President of the Rotary Club of Carmarthen.

Excellent effort by everybody and thanks for your support - well done / da iawn!

After the Dyfed champs, a team will be chosen to take part in the annual Dyfed and West Glamorgan schools match at Swansea University on Wednesday 13 July.l
