At the beginning of a New Year, the first championship event of 2019 took place at the National Indoor Athletics Centre at Cyncoed Campus, Cardiff over the weekend. The Welsh Athletics Indoor Open Meeting incorporating the South, East & West Wales & South West England Championships saw athletes of all ages from the under 13 to under 17 age groups looking to get their year off to a good start ahead of the remaining busy winter months.

Following the first successful day at the start of December, over 500 athletes were back at the indoor track to battle for individual performances and podium positions. A big turnout of friends, family and spectators watched on from the side-lines and made plenty of noise, with only standing room spaces available for the majority of the afternoon.

An Announcers Course was arranged and led by the experienced James Thie and the six who signed up to the course did an excellent job commentating on the races and providing information in both English and Welsh. Using the fantastic facilities in Cyncoed on Sunday, competitors travelled from all over the southern part of Wales, from Pembrokeshire to Newport, and even as far as Exeter, Plymouth and Andover.

The second day's events over the seven-hour programme included a number of 60 metre sprint heats as well as the 60 metres over the hurdles. The morning saw a series of 800m and 1500m time trial races held around the track, as cross-country runners took a break from the rain and mud outdoors to compete alongside familiar faces over a 200m track. Those competitions not held on day 1 were included in the second day's schedule on the field, with the shot, long jump and pole vault events held for all six age groups. A minute's silence was also observed for Brian Alvey during the morning.

Again, the meeting saw gold, silver and bronze medals at stake for the leading East Wales, South Wales and South West England finishers which meant that every second, jump and throw counted.

As a pilot initiative this indoor season, West Wales Championship events were incorporated into the Welsh Athletics Junior Open Meetings for track disciplines only from 200m to 1500m inclusive, for the Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 age groups. This time round, 800m and 1500m runners were eligible for medals, whilst all the other events were run in the junior open element.

60m, 60m Hurdles, Shot, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump & Pole Vault will be held at the Swansea University Indoor Athletics Track, at the annual West Wales Championships, next weekend (12th and 13th January) for all age categories as normal in the West Wales Championships.

There's plenty still to come at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff between now and mid March, which includes the Cardiff Met University Non Thomas New Year Open, two-day Welsh Athletics Indoor Senior Championships and a full weekend at the Welsh Athletics Indoor Junior Championships. The Welsh Athletics Indoor U20 International will return at the beginning of March, following the unfortunate postponement in 2017 because of the adverse weather conditions. Hundreds of Wales' top juniors and seniors are expected to be in action as Welsh titles and International honours will be on the line.
